Program Overview

SYA softball plays in Centreville, Clifton, and Fairfax in Fairfax County, Virginia. Our recreational league (house program) plays both spring and fall seasons under the Little League banner. We welcome all girls regardless of ability or previous playing experience.

When does the season start?

Fall: Early August
Spring: March

When does the season end?

Fall: Early November​
Spring: June before school ends.

When do practices start?

Fall: Early August
Spring: March

How many times per week are practices?

  • Rookies: 1 practice per week
  • AA, AA Majors, Seniors: 1-2 practices per week​

When do games start?

Fall: After Labor Day
Spring: April

Where will the games be?

Various locations throughout the Centreville/Clifton area.

Are there tryouts/evaluations? When?

Spring: Yes, early March.
Fall: There are no tryouts/evaluations.

Will all participants make the team?

Yes, players are placed on teams based on tryouts and evaluations.

Boundaries

Stay in bounds

Every youth participating in the SYA Little League program must live within the boundaries or have a waiver approved by Little League Baseball.

If a player attends one of the following schools, they are eligible to play with SYA Little League. All that is required is the completion of a School Enrollment Form following registration.

Schedule/Calendar

When do I get my child’s schedule?

Approximately two weeks before the start of the season.


Age Limits & Groupings

  • Advanced Player Pitch Division: For Spring Majors veterans, AAA All-Stars, and 12-year-olds.
  • Intermediate Division: For Spring AAA and advanced AA players.
  • Introductory Division: This is for remaining AA and Spring A division players looking to advance.

*Rookie, Coach Pitch, and Tee Ball levels remain consistent with the Spring season

Intro player-pitch softball. Based on tryouts/evaluations and a player’s past playing experience, Managers make player selections to form team rosters. You’re moving on up – after preseason tryouts/evaluations, undrafted players get selected in the minor league draft. Graduate to the top level of softball, where players continue to enhance skills built in past seasons. After preseason tryouts/evaluations, Managers select their team rosters.

Fees

Families will receive a $15 multi-child discount.

Acceptable Payments Options

The system accepts Visa or MasterCard & online checks (your registration is not FINAL until your check payment is received). You may pay your registration fees, summer skills camp fees, and make donations during online registration. You may register multiple players online as well and receive a multiple player discount.


Scholarship/Financial Aid Info

SYA offers scholarships to all SYA participants of all recreational sports who qualify under the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. To learn more about SYA scholarships click the button below.


Equipment Requirement

  • Softball glove
  • Softball pants
  • Cleats (optional at lower levels but recommended)
  • Water bottle
  • Face guards (required depending on the position)
  • Non-breakable lenses for glasses (if applicable)

Players must provide their own basketball shoes and pocketless basketball shorts.

Are there equipment rentals?

No rentals, but teams are provided shared equipment.

Where do I get equipment?

SYA recommends Dick’s Sporting Goods or Amazon.

Are uniforms/jerseys provided?

SYA provides each player with a Washington Nationals team hat and shirt​.

Is there a picture day?

Yes.

Weather Policy

Please check on field status if it has rained in the last 48 hours.

Decisions on field status are generally made by 3:30pm each day Monday-Friday and by 7am on Saturday and Sunday.


Field/Gym Status info can be obtained by:

  • Contacting your coach first and foremost
    [Coaches, check your email the night before game days, to determine whether the school fields and gyms have been closed because of inclement weather, etc. and to alert the members of your team.]

FAQs

When do schedules come out?

Fairfax County issues permits to SYA to use facilities in the Centreville/Clifton area. Typically a team will practice at the same facility each week with varying locations for weekend games.

When do I get notified about my child’s coach/practices/games?

Notification of schedules/locations/times will be sent out 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the season (as determined by when we receive permits).

How will I be notified?
