Season League Info/Program Overview

Minimize contact and maximize competition in a co-ed gridiron environment.

SYA Flag Football is a fast-paced, fun-oriented program that teaches the fundamentals of football in a non-contact environment for both boys and girls, focusing on physical, mental, and emotional development. The program emphasizes sportsmanship, team play, self-discipline, and maximum participation​.

When does the season start?

The season begins with Opening Day in April.

When does the season end?

The season ends in June before the school year ends.

When do practices start?

Practices start early to mid-March.

How many times per week are practices?

1-2 per week.

When do games start?

Games start in April​. There are no games held on Memorial Day weekend.

Where will the games be?

Games are held on Sundays (6 game season plus playoffs) at Centreville High School and other locations.

Do you need referees?

Yes! SYA is always in need of referees. Great opportunity for high school students to make some extra cash on Sundays or adults looking for a side hustle.

Are there evaluations/tryouts? When?

There are evaluations for grades 2-9, but no evaluations for K/1st grade​. Evaluations are typically held in early March.

Will all participants make the team?

Yes, all participants will be placed on a team.

What is a season versus a clinic?

The season consists of regular practices and games, while clinics, such as the Skills Camp, are optional opportunities for additional practice and learning.

Is there a picture day?

Yes, Picture Day is usually scheduled in April.

Schedule/Calendar

When do I get my child’s schedule?

Approximately two weeks before the start of the season.


Age Limits & Groupings

Flag football is open to boys and girls in grades K-9th grade.


Fees

Registration fees are $170.

Fairfax County user fee $10.00 per player.

Fairfax County Out-of-County fee is $50 per player.

Acceptable Payments Options

The system accepts Visa or MasterCard & online checks (your registration is not FINAL until your check payment is received). You may pay your registration fees, and make donations during online registration. You may register multiple players online as well and receive a multiple player discount.


Scholarship / financial aid information:

SYA offers scholarships to all SYA participants of all recreational sports who qualify under the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. To learn more about SYA scholarships, click here.


Equipment Requirements

  • Sneakers or gym-type shoes. Cleats are not permitted.
  • Athletic wear – gym shorts and t-shirts.
  • Mouthguards are REQUIRED and must be worn during the entire game.

Are there equipment rentals?

No.

Where do I get equipment?

Players are required to wear sneakers and gym-type clothes (shorts and t-shirts), and a mouthguard. Cleats are not allowed.

Are uniforms/jerseys provided?

These will be provided by SYA before the season begins.

Attendance Policy:
Full participation in practices and games is mandatory, and absences should be reported to the coach in advance. Missing practices can negatively impact the entire team.

Weather Policy

Inclement weather cancellations are posted by 5 PM. If no updates are provided, assume practices and games are on. If lightning occurs, practice is delayed for 30 minutes or canceled by the head coach.


Boundaries

There are no boundary requirements for flag football, however a $50 out-of-county fee does apply to participants who reside outside of Fairfax County.

Fairfax County issues permits to SYA to use facilities in the Centreville/Clifton area. Typically a team will practice at the same facility each week with varying locations for weekend games.

When do I get notified about my child’s coach/practices/games?

Notification of schedules/locations/times will be sent out 1-2 weeks prior to start of season (as determined by when we receive permits).

How will I be notified?

Mobile app, email, etc.
