SYA Recreational Field Hockey

SYA Field Hockey offers a fall season for boys and girls in rising 1st through 9th grades. The program focuses on skill development, teamwork, and fun, with practices once a week and games on Saturdays (occasionally Sundays). Players are grouped by age and ability, and games are played in a 7v7 format, with goalies being optional.

When does the season start?

Practices start in late August, with games starting in early to mid-September.

Spring Clinics will be held starting in May.

When does the season end?

The season ends in mid to late November.

How many times per week are practices?

Once per weekday, typically between 5:30-9pm at local fields in Centreville.

When do games start?

Early to mid-September.

Where will the games be?

Games are scheduled based on the league, but they are primarily held at ECL Park, Westfield High School​ and surrounding locations.

Are there evaluations/tryouts? When?

There are no evaluations or tryouts.

Will all participants make the team?

Yes.

What is a season versus a clinic?

The season involves regular practices and games, while clinics focus on skill-building.

Spring Clinics will be held May 4, 18, June 1 & 8 at Westfield High School. You may attend 1, 2, 3 or all 4 clinics.  The coaches and some of their players will focus on learning/developing the following: stick skills, different types of hits, passing, receiving, 1v1 defending skills, age-appropriate principles of team and off ball movement, and decision making.

What are the registration dates for all SYA sports?

When do I get my child’s schedule?

Approximately two weeks before the start of the season.

The field hockey program is open to boys and girls in rising 1st through 9th grades. Players are grouped by both age and ability.

The system accepts Visa or MasterCard & online checks (your registration is not FINAL until your check payment is received). You may pay your registration fees,  summer skills camp fees, and make donations during online registration. You may register multiple players online as well and receive a multiple player discount.

SYA offers scholarships to all SYA participants of all recreational sports who qualify under the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. To learn more about SYA scholarships, click here.

• Field Hockey Stick – stick length- top of stick should come up to the top of the hip bone.

Are there equipment rentals?

No.

Where do I get equipment?

Dick’s Sporting Goods or Amazon are recommended.

Are uniforms/jerseys provided?

Will be provided by SYA.

Refund Policy

• Recreational Season/Camp/Clinic Refunds: Requests for refunds must be made in writing and received prior to the roster distribution meeting (coaches meeting) or the first regularly scheduled game that the registrant’s team plays, whichever occurs first. The registration fee will be refunded minus $35 administrative fees prior to that date. No fees will be returned after that time

Safety Policy
Players are required to wear shinguards, mouthguards, and are encouraged to use faceguards for additional safety​.

Please check on field status if it has rained in the last 48 hours.

Decisions on field status are generally made by 3:30pm each day Monday-Friday and by 7am on Saturday and Sunday.

There are no boundary requirements. Players from outside Fairfax County are required to pay an additional $50 fee.
