Season League Info/Program Overview

A game is nothing without cheer. 

Our squad is open to both boys and girls ages 5-18. We cheer at regular season Saturday football games from August to October, playoff and championship games in November, SYA Cheerleading Night at Centreville High School and Westfield High School, Homecoming Parades, and the VHSL Regional Cheer Competition.

When does the season start?

Cheer Team placements will be made at the end of July/early August. Games begin in September, typically the weekend after Labor Day.

When does the season end?

Cheerleading continues until the completion of playoff games in November.

When do practices start?

Practices start in August.

When will practices be?

Practices are one night per week at an elementary school in Centreville, Virginia, for one hour.

When are the games for SYA football and sideline cheer?

Games are on Saturdays or Sundays from 8 AM to 9 PM. Schedules will be shared as soon as they are received from SYA Football. Regular season football games start in early September and end in late October.

Where are the games played?

SYA home games are at:

  • CVHS Stadium
  • Braddock Road Park
  • CVHS practice field #1 (turf field next to the Stadium) Away games are played throughout Fairfax County. Cheer squads may choose to follow a football team or cheer only at home games, based on the coach’s decision.

Are there evaluations/tryouts? When?

Tryouts are not necessary for participation in sideline cheer. Athletes are placed into teams after evaluations.

Is there a picture day?

Sideline Cheerleading takes pictures on the opening day of football, usually at the Grid Iron Bowl.

Fees

SYA Cheerleading is open to boys and girls ages 5-18. Families will receive a $15 multi-child discount.

  • Sideline Cheer Registration
    $170.00 (plus admin fees of $10.00) If you are out of Fairfax county, there is an additional fee of $50.00.
  • Pink Poms (October use):
    Purchase for $22.00
  • SYA Cheer Uniform:
    There is no separate fee for a cheer uniform. It is provided in August and must be returned at the end of the season in November
  • Incidentals:$5.00 to $75.00 (Sideline Cheer requires bow, boy shorts (black in color) mock turtlenecks (black in color), and cheer shoes (white in color). Incidental costs may exceed $75.00 if parents purchase higher quality cheer shoes, an SYA Cheer jacket, etc.)

Acceptable Payments Options

The system accepts Visa or MasterCard & online checks (your registration is not FINAL until your check payment is received). You may pay your registration fees, and make donations during online registration. You may register multiple players online as well and receive a multiple player discount.


Scholarship/Financial Aid Info

SYA offers scholarships to all SYA participants of all recreational sports who qualify under the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. To learn more about SYA scholarships, click here.

Are there equipment rentals?

No.

Where do I get equipment?

Contact our commissioner with sizes for uniforms, spirit wear, and shoes in September.

Are uniforms/jerseys provided?

SYA provides a sideline uniform. Parents/guardians may need to purchase supplemental pieces (bow, socks, body liner, briefs, leggings, spirit wear), plus white cheer shoes.

Rules and Policies

Full participation is expected from all members of the cheer team. Missing practices or games negatively affects the team.

Valid reasons for missing practice are:

  • Contagious Illness / Injury
  • Death in Family
  • Mandatory School Function that is for a GRADE such as Band / Choir Concert / Testing, etc.

Athletes should notify their coach via email, phone, and/or text at least one (1) hour prior to the expected absence. You are expected to be at practices, games, and/or performances, unless you are injured and/or suffering from a contagious illness.

Weather Policy

Sideline cheer teams cheer in inclement weather unless otherwise notified by the coach.

Please check on field status if it has rained in the last 48 hours.

Decisions on field status are generally made by 3:30pm each day Monday-Friday and by 7am on Saturday and Sunday.


Field/Gym Status info can be obtained by:

  • Contacting your coach first and foremost
    [Coaches, check your email the night before game days, to determine whether the school fields and gyms have been closed because of inclement weather, etc. and to alert the members of your team.]
  • FCPS emergency website (for school fields/gyms)

FAQs

When do schedules come out?

Where are the games/practices held?

Fairfax County issues permits to SYA to use facilities in the Centreville/Clifton area. Typically a team will practice at the same facility each week with varying locations for weekend games.

When do I get notified about my child’s coach/practices/games?

Notification of schedules/locations/times will be sent out 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the season (as determined by when we receive permits).

How will I be notified?

Mobile app, email, etc.
