Program Overview

In Winter and Summer, athletes will compete in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL), tailored to advanced players preparing for high school play. Tryouts are held to select a limited number of players, ensuring that the program remains competitive.

 

We are also currently offering a Spring AAU team for a 6th grade girls team. Tryouts will be held on Sunday, February 9th and Monday, February 10th.  Tryouts on Sunday will take place at Liberty Middle School from 4pm-5:30 and on Monday at Centre Ridge Elementary from 7:30pm-9:00pm.  In order to be considered for a team, players must attend both tryouts. The team will practice 1-2 times epr week and take part in 5-7 tournaments from mid-March to the end of May. Please visit the fees section to view the fees for the Spring AAU team.

When does the season start?

Winter season begins early-mid October.

Summer season starts in June

When does the season end?

Winter season ends in March.

Summer season ends July 31.

When do practices start?

Winter season practices begin in mid October.

Summer season practices begin in June.

How many times per week are practices?

Teams practice twice weekly on weekdays, between the hours of 5:30-9pm.

When do games start?

Winter games start on weekends (with occasional weekday) in November and conclude in March.

Summer games are weekdays start in June and end July 31.

Where will the games be?

Games are held at Fairfax County school gyms​.

Are there tryouts? When?

Yes. Tryouts for Winter are in October. Tryouts for Summer are in May/June.

Attendance at skill evaluations is mandatory for all players from 4th grade and up, with a make-up night available. Failure to attend may result in the player not being placed on a team. Additionally, travel players are not permitted to be registered for house league basketball or other local area travel leagues.

Will all participants make the team?

No, the program is selective, and only a limited number of players are chosen based on their performance at tryouts​.

Is there a picture day?

No.

Age Limits & Groupings

For Summer leagues, players compete in their “rising grade,” the grade they will enter in the upcoming school year.

Age Range: 5th-8th Grade

Spring AAU 2025: 6th grade girls


Fees

Fairfax County Use Fee: $10.00 per player

Out-of-County Charge: $50.00 per player

Families will receive a $15 multi-child discount.

Acceptable Payments Options

The system accepts Visa or MasterCard & online checks (your registration is not FINAL until your check payment is received). You may pay your registration fees,  summer skills camp fees, and make donations during online registration. You may register multiple players online as well and receive a multiple player discount.


Scholarship/Financial Aid Info

SYA offers scholarships to all SYA participants of all recreational sports who qualify under the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. To learn more about SYA scholarships, click here.


Equipment Requirement

  • Basketball shoes

Players must provide their own basketball shoes.

Are there equipment rentals?

No.

Where do I get equipment?

Dick’s Sporting Goods or Amazon is recommended.

Are uniforms/jerseys provided?

A basketball jersey and shorts is provided by SYA.

It is the responsibility of each coach to determine whether the school gyms have been closed because of inclement weather, etc. and to alert the members of his/her team. FAQs

When do schedules come out?

Where are the games/practices held?

Fairfax County issues permits to SYA to use facilities in the Centreville/Clifton area. Typically a team will practice at the same facility each week with varying locations for weekend games.

When do I get notified about my child’s coach/practices/games?

Notification of schedules/locations/times will be sent out 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the season (as determined by when we receive permits).

How will I be notified?

Mobile app, email, etc.
