Southwestern Youth Association Sports

Spring 2024 Challenger

Team size:

We are up to 15 players, which is fantastic.

Demosphere:

All of our practices & families are now loaded into Demosphere. If you haven’t already, you should download this app. My hope is to use Demosphere to communicate throughout the season. I am new to it so there may be some kinks. If you have any trouble with the app, let me know.

Practices:

Our practices will be Fridays at Greenbriar Park #2 from 5-630pm, starting this Friday. This is different from past seasons where we played at Chantilly Park #2. If you can make this week’s practice, great. If not, that’s not a problem.

Uniforms:

I have our uniforms and will pass them out this Friday. If you cannot make this Friday, I can give it to you next week.

Little League Opening Day (4/6):

Reminder - Little League opening day is this Saturday, starting at 9am at Chantilly Park. For any players who attend, I will walk onto the field with them when it is our turn. CYALL has posted more information about Opening Day on Facebook.

Safety Balls:

If you are unfamiliar, we use safety balls when we play. Think squishy baseball. Equipment: See initial email below.

Assistance:

I am always open to any assistance throughout the season. I enjoy getting to know the players and providing them an opportunity to play ball, but I need to be honest in that I’ve had no specialized training aside from the game of baseball.

Challenger Baseball

Since 1993, the Sully Challenger Baseball in Western Fairfax County has provided the opportunity for mentally and physically challenged boys and girls, aged 5 to 18, and up to 22 if they are still in a high school program, to participate in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. Sully Challenger Baseball is a division of Little League Baseball and is co-sponsored by the Chantilly Youth Association (CYA) and the Southwest Youth Association (SYA).

Challenger Baseball fosters teamwork, self-esteem and social skills and lets kids experience how it feels to be cheered and earn awards for their achievements. There are currently approximately 20-30 families involved in the Sully Challenger Baseball program.

Everyone gets a chance to play, regardless of limitations or ability. The rules are simple. Each player gets a chance to bat, and nobody gets out. The side is retired when the offense has batted through. Little League also offers a Senior Challenger Division, for players ages 15 and up. There is no age limitation for the Senior Challenger Division, although at this time this division is not played by Sully Challenger Baseball unless player registration deems it is necessary. Players who are ages 15-18 may register and play in either the Little League or Senior Challenger divisions. Our season starts in early April and we play Friday evenings between 6pm and 7:30pm at Chantilly Park on Stringfellow Road (across the street from Chantilly High School) and is routinely supported by teams from both Chantilly and SYA that come out for the night as “buddies”.

The Challenger program is expected to be open for registration once again in the Spring of 2024 with CYA (https://chantillyyouth.demosphere-secure.com/_registration).  Any questions, please contact the Sully Challenger Coordinator: Joe Waterman
