Season League Info/Program Overview

SYA Track & Field is open to boys and girls ages 4-18. The program focuses on developing running, jumping, and throwing skills through regular practices and weekend competitions. All skill levels are welcome, with no tryouts required.

When does the season start?

Fall: Cross country starts in August.
Spring: Track & Field starts in March.
Summer: Track & Field starts in June.

Fall: Cross country ends in November.
Spring: Track & Field ends in June.

When do practices start?

Fall: Cross country starts in August.
Spring: Track & Field starts in March.
Summer: Track & Field starts in June.

How many times per week are practices?

Practices are held 2-3 times per week, typically on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Where will the meets be?

Competitions are held locally on weekends against area clubs and at larger regional meets like USATF or AAU events in the Northern Virginia area.

Are there tryouts/evaluations?

No tryouts are required; all skill levels are welcome.

Will all participants make the team?

Yes, everyone who registers can participate.

Is there a picture day?

No.

Schedule/Calendar

When do I get my child’s schedule?

Approximately two weeks before the start of the season.


Age Limits & Groupings

  • Cubs* (4-7 yrs)
  • Sub-Bantam (8 & under)
  • Bantam (9-10 yrs)
  • Sub-Youth* (11-12 yrs)
  • Youth (13-14 yrs)
  • Intermediate (15-16 yrs)
  • Young Men/Women (17-18 yrs)

Divisions Sub-Bantam thru Sub-Youth are allowed to compete in a maximum of 3 events, including relays.

Youth thru Young divisions are allowed a maximum of 4 events including relays.

Most events contested at indoor meets are: 1500m and 3000m race walk; 55m, 200m, 400m sprints; 55m and 200m hurdles; 800m; 1600m (mile) and 3000m runs; 4 X 200m and 4 X 400m relays.

Field events contested are: shot put, long jump, and high jump.

Outdoor events contested are similar, but run the 100m instead of the 55m; the 80m, 100m, and 110m hurdles instead of the 55m hurdles; and the 4 X 100m instead of the 4 X 200m relay. Turbo-javelin and discus are added to the field events.

Families will receive a $15 multi-child discount.

Acceptable Payments Options

The system accepts Visa or MasterCard & online checks (your registration is not FINAL until your check payment is received). You may pay your registration fees, and make donations during online registration. You may register multiple players online as well and receive a multiple player discount.


Scholarship/Financial Aid Info

SYA offers scholarships to all SYA participants of all recreational sports who qualify under the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. To learn more about SYA scholarships, click here.


Equipment Requirement

Athletes need a solid pair of running shoes, with sprint spikes recommended but not required for competitions.

Are there equipment rentals?

No.

Where do I get equipment?

SYA recommends shoe purchases at Dick’s Sporting Goods or Amazon.

Are uniforms/jerseys provided?

Athletes in the SYA Track & Field program receive a singlet and shorts as part of their registration​.

Weather Policy

Please check on field status if it has rained in the last 48 hours.

Decisions on field status are generally made by 3:30pm each day Monday-Friday and by 7am on Saturday and Sunday.


Field/Gym Status info can be obtained by:

  • Contacting your coach first and foremost
    [Coaches, check your email the night before game days, to determine whether the school fields and gyms have been closed because of inclement weather, etc. and to alert the members of your team.]
  • FCPS emergency website (for school fields/gyms)

When do schedules come out?

Where are the games/practices held?

Fairfax County issues permits to SYA to use facilities in the Centreville/Clifton area. Typically a team will practice at the same facility each week with varying locations for weekend games.

When do I get notified about my child’s coach/practices/games?

Notification of schedules/locations/times will be sent out 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the season (as determined by when we receive permits).

How will I be notified?

Mobile app, email, etc.
