Program Overview

SYA Extreme lives up to its name – SYA Extreme is a year-round cheerleading league open to boys and girls ages 5-19 where athletes pick up all the moves and choreography they’ll need to compete locally, regionally, and nationally.

When does the season start?

Tryouts are held in May/June, and preliminary teams are determined. Athletes practice throughout the summer, working on tumbling and stunting skills. If requested, athletes may be re-evaluated in August for an higher level team.  Mandatory team practices begin in August after the start of school.

Extreme teams begin competing in January. Five to seven competitions are scheduled for the season from January to April/May, with the final competition held in May. Competitions are generally held on Saturdays and Sundays.

When does the season end?

The final competition is typically held in May.

When do practices start?

Practices begin in June. Athletes are trained for both the sideline cheer and competition season. If you cheer for Extreme you are automatically require to cheer for Sideline cheer in the fall. The only exceptions is if there are not enough football teams to cheer for or home games to cheer at, Extreme athletes may be unable to cheer.

When do games start?

Competition Cheerleading focuses on competitions and not football games. To learn about cheerleading at football games, see Sideline Cheerleading.

Where will the games be?

Competitions are primarily held in Maryland and Virginia, with the possibility of travel to other states for special end-of-season competitions, such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Florida, and New Jersey.
