Season League Info/Program Overview

Lay down the new lore of the mat with collegiate Folkstyle wrestling featuring all the moves that matter: half nelsons, pop and chops, and snap and spins for the win.

SYA Recreational Wrestling welcomes boys and girls in grades 1-8 to learn wrestling in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. Our program focuses on developing skills, fitness, and confidence for all experience levels, with opportunities for both practices and local competitions.

When does the season start?

Practices for the 2024-2025 season will start the week of November 11th​.

When does the season end?

The season will run through mid-to-late February.

When do practices start?

Practices start the week of November 11th. For grades K-2 practices start the week of December 3rd.

How many times per week are practices?

Practices are held two nights per week for 1st thru 6th grade. Three nights per week for 7th-8th grade.

When do games start?

Matches begin in January.

Where will the matches be?

Matches are held at various locations, including Manassas Baptist Church on Saturdays and Meridian High School on Sundays.

Are there tryouts/evaluations? When?

No.

Will all participants make the team?

Yes.

Is there a picture day?

Schedule/Calendar

When do I get my child’s schedule?

Approximately two weeks before the start of the season.

Practice Schedule:

K-2 practice: Starts December 3, 2024, Tuesday & Thursday, 6:30-7:30 pm. Westfield JV Wrestling Room. A coach will greet you.

3-5 practice: Starts November 12, 2024, Tuesday & Thursday, 6:30-7:30 pm. Westfield Varsity Wrestling Room.

6-8 practice: Starts November, 11, 2024, Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Westfield Varsity Wrestling Room.

Tentative Match Schedule:

Mason Dixon Youth Wrestling League: January 5, January 12, January 19, January 26, February 2nd, February 9, February 16, February 23.


Age Limits & Groupings

Boys and Girls are welcome in the following age groups:

  • Grades 1-3
  • Grades 4-6
  • Grades 7-8

Fees

League Full Program Practice only Singlet Rental
Wrestling $210 ($15 sibling/family discount available) $160 $65 (refundable deposit)

Acceptable Payments Options

The system accepts Visa or MasterCard & online checks (your registration is not FINAL until your check payment is received). You may pay your registration fees, and make donations during online registration. You may register multiple players online as well and receive a multiple player discount.


Scholarship/Financial Aid Info

SYA offers scholarships to all SYA participants of all recreational sports who qualify under the Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program. To learn more about SYA scholarships click the button below


Equipment Requirement

All wrestlers must wear wrestling shoes and headgear during practice. If you do not currently have wrestling shoes, your child may practice in socks. Wrestlers may not practice in sneakers, tennis shoes, or barefoot.

For kids that have braces, mouth guards are required.

Note: Please have your child wear other shoes to practice and change into their wrestling shoes after arriving. We need to keep the mats as clean as possible.

Wrestlers should wear fitted t-shirts and shorts to practice. Do not wear loose or baggy clothing. Please note that it is extremely hot in the wrestling room.
Please send a large water bottle with your child to practice. We do not want to send wrestlers to the hallways to use the water fountains. There will be frequent water breaks during practice.

Are there equipment rentals?

Singlets will be issued after practice begins and a rental check of $65 will be due at the time of issue. It will be held (not cashed) until the end of the season and returned when the equipment is returned.

Where do I get equipment?

Wrestling headgear, mouthguards and shoes can be purchased online (Amazon, www.rudis.com) or from Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Are uniforms/jerseys provided?

Weather Policy

Please check on field status if it has rained in the last 48 hours.

Decisions on field status are generally made by 3:30pm each day Monday-Friday and by 7am on Saturday and Sunday.


Field/Gym Status info can be obtained by:

  • Contacting your coach first and foremost
    [Coaches, check your email the night before game days, to determine whether the school fields and gyms have been closed because of inclement weather, etc. and to alert the members of your team.]

FAQs

When do schedules come out?

Approximately two weeks before the start of the season.

Where are the games/practices held?

Fairfax County issues permits to SYA to use facilities in the Centreville/Clifton area. Typically a team will practice at the same facility each week with varying locations for weekend games.

When do I get notified about my child’s coach/practices/games?

Notification of schedules/locations/times will be sent out 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the season (as determined by when we receive permits).

How will I be notified?

Mobile app, email, etc.
