If multiple tryout sessions are offered for your age group, you only need to attend one. However, players who are especially interested in joining SYA should strongly consider registering for the earliest available session.
Why Should I Register Early?
Roster spots are limited – not just by team, but by position. Our coaching staff begins evaluating and extending offers after each tryout. That means waiting for a later session could reduce your chances, even if you’re a strong player, simply because your position may already be filled.
We want every athlete to have the best opportunity to showcase their skills and be considered. Attending an earlier session helps make that possible.
We also realize that athletes may be balancing competing priorities that prevents them from making one of our scheduled tryout times. If you have a conflict, but still want to be evaluated for a team, please contact us and we will try to accommodate your needs.
There is a non-refundable $35 tryout fee due at the time of registration.
Tryouts: Arrival & Check In
Players should arrive up to 15 minutes early to check-in and warm-up. Upon arrival, players should stop at the check-in desk to get a number and to provide proof of CHRVA membership as well as their completed USAV Medical Release Form (see below for more information).
What Can I Expect At Tryouts?
Players can expect tryouts to last approximately 2 hours, where they will warm up, execute a series of drills, and be put in game-play situations. Our coaches will be evaluating players not only on skill and athleticism, but also on attitude, teamwork, communication, coachability, and other intangible attributes that we believe are critical to forming a cohesive and high-performing team.
After tryouts, some players may receive an offer immediately, some within 1-2 days, and some may be asked to return for a “call back” tryout, where coaches want to spend a little more time with the player before making a final decision.
While we would love to provide playing opportunities for everyone who tries out with SYA, there are inevitably going to be more players trying out than there are available roster spots. Once all offers have been extended, any player not selected will receive email confirmation of the same.
How Do I Register?
Tryout participation is regulated by CHRVA and requires completion of all steps below. Failure to complete all of these steps may prevent your athlete from trying out for a team.
1.Confirm your age-group eligibility
USAV groups players into age groups based on their age as of July 1 of the current year – please refer to the USAV age definition chart to determine what age group(s) your player is eligible for. Skilled players may “play up” in an older age group; however, they are not allowed to “play down” in an age level lower than their USAV age. As a general rule, players are encouraged to play in their peer group (grade level).
For example, a player who is born on June 30th, 2011 has a primary age group of 15u. She is eligible to play in the 16u bracket if she wanted to be considered for that age group; however, she cannot play in 14u or younger. Likewise, a player born on July 2, 2011 is eligible to play at 14u level or higher (since her age as of July 1st was 14).
If a player wishes to be evaluated for multiple age groups, she must register for each tryout separately. Each registration requires a $35 non-refundable tryout fee.
Before registering a player to tryout for an age group where she would be “playing up” or registering your player for tryouts for more than one age group, please contact the SYA Volleyball Commissioner .
2. Register with CHRVA
All players must purchase a membership with CHRVA prior to trying out. Please note: when registering, there are two options – Limited ($25) and Full ($60). The Limited Membership is valid for 10 days and is only available during the tryout season. The Full Membership allows your player to be rostered on a team if she is chosen.
If you register with a Limited Membership and are selected to join a SYA Club Volleyball team, you’ll need to upgrade to a Full Membership for an additional $35.
Regardless of which membership you select, you will receive an email with your membership number and QR code that can serve as proof of membership. You will be required to bring this with you to tryouts (see below for more details).
All players must download, complete, and bring a printed & signed copy of the USAV Medical Release form to tryouts.
What do I bring to Tryouts?
We will send a reminder to all players before tryouts, but here is your checklist:
Proof of CHRVA membership (the QR code and/or email you received that shows your athlete’s name, CHRVA membership number and expiration date of her membership)
The completed USAV Medical Release Form
A full water bottle with a secure lid (No “Stanley” style please!)
Knee pads, arm sleeves, and any other gear your athlete typically wears while playing.
