US Youth Soccer Age Group Update – Information for SYA Families
US Youth Soccer, working in partnership with US Club Soccer and U.S. Soccer, has announced a change to how youth soccer age groups are defined. This update will take effect beginning with the 2026/27 seasonal year and will impact the SYA Soccer recreational program beginning with the Fall 2026 season.
This information provides a clear overview of what is changing, why the change is being made, and how it may affect SYA players and families.
What Is Changing?
Beginning with the 2026/27 season, youth soccer age groups will be organized using a school-year style birthdate range (August 1 – July 31) instead of the current calendar-year system (January 1 – December 31).
For SYA Soccer, this change will be implemented starting with Fall 2026 recreational program.
Why Is This Change Happening?
The shift is intended to better align youth soccer with the academic calendar and reduce situations where players—often those with later-in-the-year birthdays—are separated from peers during key transition years, especially in middle and high school.

The change was adopted jointly by the national governing bodies of youth soccer in the United States:
Will This Affect the Current (Spring 2026) season?
No. Our rosters for this season are locked.
Will Players Be Grouped by School Grade?
No. Players will continue to be placed based on birthdate, not school grade.
While all public schools in our area use a September 30 school cutoff, soccer age groups will follow the U.S. Soccer August 1 – July 31 birthdate range. Because these cutoff dates are different, a player’s soccer age group may not always match their school grade.
Important reminder: Soccer age groups are determined by U.S. Soccer birthdate rules, not by local school enrollment policies.
Example: A player born on September 15 may be among the youngest students in their school grade due to the September 30 school cutoff. For soccer, that same player will be placed based on their birthdate within the August 1–July 31 age group range.
Which Players Are Most Likely to Be Affected?
Players with birthdays between August and December are most likely to notice a change. Many of these players will remain in their current age group for the 2026/27 season rather than moving up.
Example: A player born in October 2016 who is currently U10 will remain U10 for the 2026/27 season.
Can My Child Play Up an Age Group?
Playing up is not automatic. Decisions are made by technical staff based on what is best for the individual player’s development and are approved only in limited and exceptional circumstances. Factors considered include skill level, physical and emotional maturity, and long-term development.
Players that are born after the cutoff date, but are in the next higher school grade, may request to play up with their classmates in the next higher grade. Verification of school grade may be requested. These players will initially be registered in their default age group but can be moved to play with their classmates.
All such requests should be emailed to us as soon as you complete your child’s registration for the Fall 2026 season.

Families can determine their player’s age group for the 2026/27 season by using the official US Soccer Age Group Calculator. An age group chart is also provided below for reference.
