Trying a New Youth Sport? 7 Things Parents Should Know Before Registering

Trying a new youth sport should be exciting—not overwhelming. But if you’re a parent, you probably have a few questions before you hit Register.

Does my child need experience? How much time will it take? What equipment do we need? And what’s the difference between rec and travel?

SYA offers recreational (and travel) youth sports for kids throughout the Northern Virginia community. If your child is thinking about trying something new, here are seven things to know before you register.

1. Does my child need experience?

Usually, no! Many SYA rec sports welcome beginners alongside experienced players.

Coaches know kids come in with different skill levels. The goal is to learn, improve and have fun along the way.

Some programs or divisions may have different expectations, so check the individual sport page before registering.

2. What’s the typical time commitment?

It varies by sport and age. Many teams practice during the week and play games on weekends, but schedules vary by program.

Because SYA relies on volunteer coaches, exact practice schedules become available 2 weeks before season begins for most sports.

Have a tight family schedule? Check the sport page, as some sports have typical practice days/schedules listed. Still need help? Email us!

3. What equipment will we need?

Check before you shop. Youth sports equipment requirements vary considerably by sport, and some SYA programs may provide certain items.

Check the individual sport page or registration information before buying equipment. If your child is a beginner, don’t hesitate to ask us what’s really necessary for the first season.

4. Can my child play more than one sport?

Often, yes. Playing multiple sports gives kids a chance to try new things and develop different skills.

The challenge is scheduling. Practices and games can overlap, so compare the expected commitments before registering for two sports in the same season.

5. How do I choose the right age or division?

Don’t worry—we can help. Different youth sports may group players by age, grade, birth year or governing-body rules.

Check the age or grade requirements listed for that specific SYA program or contact the sports commissioner listed on the sports page.

6. What’s the difference between recreational and travel youth sports?

Think accessibility vs. increased competition and commitment.

Recreational youth sports generally welcome a wider range of experience levels and are a great place to learn and develop.

Travel programs are typically more competitive, may require tryouts or evaluations, and often involve additional practices, games, travel and costs.

SYA has several travel programs:

Travel Soccer

Travel Baseball

Select Basketball

Competitive Cheer

Travel Softball

Travel Volleyball

And travel isn’t automatically the “next step.” The best choice is the one that fits your child and your family.

7. Who should I ask if I’m not sure?

Ask us! You don’t have to figure everything out before registering.

Visit the individual SYA sport page to find program information and contacts who can answer questions about schedules, equipment, divisions or what to expect.
