Mission

The mission of the Southwestern Youth Association Volleyball (SYAV) is to provide Western Fairfax County area youth with the opportunity to play recreational and competitive volleyball in a controlled environment that provides entertainment and enjoyment. SYAV House Volleyball will focus on development of volleyball skills.


 

SEASON SCHEDULE

Fall Season begins the week of September 11, 2017 and concludes by November 17, 2017. Online registration begins in May 2017.

REGISTRATION / SPECIAL REQUESTS / DROPS:

Players must register on-line for volleyball at www.syasports.org during the SYA fall sports registration period of May 10, 2017 to August 27, 2017 at a cost of $115.  The cost is $115.00 per child. There is a $10.00 discount for siblings. They must all register at the same time in order for the discount to be applied. A $20.00 late fee will be charged for those who register after August 27, 2017.

An additional Fairfax County imposed fee of $30 will be accessed if your child lives outside of the county. Should your child make one of the travel teams, an additional $25 will be collected for a total cost of $140.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

Each player should consider wearing volleyball knee pads and white-soled or non-marking athletic shoes. A volleyball jersey will be provided to each player as their uniform.

The mission of the Southwestern Youth Association Volleyball (SYAV) is to provide Western Fairfax County area youth with the opportunity to play recreational and competitive volleyball in a controlled environment that provides entertainment and enjoyment. SYAV House Volleyball will focus on development of volleyball skills.
COACHES NEEDED
SYAV is a volunteer program and we need coaches at every level in order to provide this program for all of the children that want to play. If you are interested in coaching please register at syasports.org. We provide practice management, drills, and training for coaches and assistant coaches.
SEASON SCHEDULE:
Spring Season begins the week of March 16, 2017 and concludes by June 4, 2017. Online registration begins on December 9, 2016 and will close on March 1, 2017. We may have to close registration at an earlier date depending on our ability to recruit coaches. We can only have teams for which we have coaches. If more players sign up than we have teams, players will be placed on a wait list based on the order that payment was received. Children of coaches are never placed on the wait list.
REGISTRATION / SPECIAL REQUESTS / DROPS:
       Players must register on-line for volleyball at syasports.org during the SYA Spring sports registration period of December 9, 2016March, 2017 at a cost of $115. The cost is $115.00 per child. A $20.00 late fee will be charged for those who register after March 1, 2017. There will be a $35 fee charged for requesting your child be removed from the program before the team rosters are formed. Any request for a refund after that date will not be granted unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as an injury to your child that prohibits him/her from participating.

HOUSE VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
SYAV House Volleyball program is designed as a developmental, recreational league. Teams are balanced to the extent possible with mixed abilities – from newcomer to more advanced skilled players. For players that desire a level of play where all players on teams have an advanced skill level, it is recommended that those players sign up for a club or travel volleyball team instead of SYAV house.
SYAV plays as a co-ed volleyball league and also offers co-ed volleyball clinics for younger players.
AGE GROUPS BY GRADES:
A player must be in grades 4th thru 12th to register for volleyball, as designated below.
GRADES FOR CO-ED HOUSE LEAGUES:
Elementary School (ES) – 4th thru 6th grade; Middle School (MS) – 7th thru 8th grade; High School (HS) – 9th thru 12th grade
PLAYER ASSESSMENT:
Player assessments will be conducted in February, 2017 at Liberty Middle School for all MS and HS grade players and for those 6th grade boys and girls wanting to play up at the MS level.
Travel League Tryouts will be on February 21, 2017 at Liberty MS from 6-9 pm for both MS and HS age girls. All players that are interested in trying out for a travel team must register for the travel tryouts and pay a $25 tryout fee. Travel Tryout link coming soon! If you don’t make a travel team and you would like to play house you must register separately for house. Anyone who tried out for the travel teams and didn’t make a team must also attend the house assessments on March 2, 2017.
House Assessments will be on March 2,2017 at Liberty MS as follows based on first initial of last name for both MS and HS age boys and girls and sixth graders wanting to play at the MS Level. Please note that House Assessments are Mandatory for all MS and HS players. If you don’t come to assessments we will place you on a team, but we will not be able to honor special requests.
  • A-G 8-8:30 PM
  • H-M 8:30-9 PM
  • N-R 9-9:30 PM
  • S-Z 9:30-10 PM
Note –  The assigned times above are tentative, you should check back before the assessment to verify the correct time. Each group defined above should show up 15 minutes before their schedule times to check in. DO NOT come to an earlier time period as you will have to wait for your assigned time.
PRACTICE / MATCH SCHEDULE:
All practices will be held on a weekday evening for 90 minutes. Typically, house teams practice on either Monday or Tuesday with the possibility of a Wednesday practice depending on gym availability. The practice night and time will be assigned to each coach based on the coaches’ schedule needs.
Matches for all leagues are once a week for 90 minutes and will occur between 5:45 PM and 9:00 PM, typically with an early and late time slots. The actual schedule will be determine per level (ES, MS, HS) and will be finalized after the number teams per level is determined. ES House Teams will play on Thursdays at Stone Middle School, MS House Teams will play on Thursdays at Liberty Middle School and HS House Teams will play on Wednesdays at Stone Middle School. MS and HS Travel Teams will play on Wednesdays at locations throughout the county. Travel team home games are at Liberty Middle School.

For players that desire a level of play where all players on teams have an advanced skill level, it is recommended that those players sign up for our club or travel volleyball team instead of SYAV house.

SYAV plays as a co-ed volleyball league, and hosts co-ed volleyball clinics throughout the year.

AGE GROUPS BY GRADES:

A player must be going into grades 4th thru 12th to register for volleyball, as designated below.

GRADES FOR CO-ED HOUSE LEAGUES:

Elementary School (ES) – 4th thru 6th grade; Middle School (MS) – 7th  through 8th grade; High School (HS) – 9th through 12th grade

PLAYER ASSESSMENT:

Player assessments will be conducted on September 8, 2016 at nZone, as noted above. Assessments are for those 6th grade boys and girls who wish to play up and for all 7th – 8th grade boys and girls.

PRACTICE / MATCH SCHEDULE:

All practices will be held on a weekday evening for 90 minutes. Exact time and day of week will depend on gym availability. The practice night and time will be assigned to each coach based on the coaches’ schedule needs. New this season the high school level will have Academy Practices in which all the high school teams will practice together so they can work the higher level players on higher level skills and lower level players on fundamental skills.

Matches for all leagues are once a week for 90 minutes and will occur during one of two time slots: 5:45 PM – 7:15 PM or 7:15 PM – 8:45 PM. Each team will meet twice each week (once for practice, once for a match). All matches will consist of five games – we always play all five games, since the goal is to play as much volleyball as possible.
