COACHES NEEDED

Remember how much fun you had playing volleyball when you were younger, now’s your chance to share your knowledge and love of the game with the next generation of players!

SYAV is a volunteer program and we need coaches at every level in order to provide this program for all of the children that want to play. If you are interested in coaching please volunteer at syasports.org. We provide practice management, drills, and training for coaches and assistant coaches.

SYA VOLLEYBALL MISSION

The mission of the Southwestern Youth Association Volleyball (SYAV) is to provide Western Fairfax County area youth with the opportunity to play recreational and competitive volleyball in a controlled environment that provides entertainment and enjoyment.

SYAV offers teams that play volleyball at 3 levels of competition and commitment:

  • House volleyball is offered in the spring and fall and is for beginning to intermediate level players and will focus on the development of basic volleyball skills. Each week, house teams have one practice (usually on Monday or Tuesday) and one match (Wednesday for high school teams and Thursday for middle and elementary school teams). Additional information about house volleyball can be found below.

  • Travel volleyball is for more experienced and skilled payers and will focus developing advanced skills along with offensive and defensive schemes. Travel volleyball is offered for middle school players in the fall and for both middle and high school players in the spring. Travel teams practice twice a week and play matches against teams from other volleyball organizations on Wednesdays at various locations across Fairfax County. For more information about SYA’s travel volleyball, click here.

  • Club volleyball offers the highest level of competition for junior volleyball players. Tryouts for club volleyball are held in November with practices starting in December. The club season runs through may or June. Club teams practice twice a week and compete in weekend tournaments (some multi-day). For more information about SYA’s club volleyball, click here.

SYAV also offers volleyball skills clinics during the summer and winter. For more information, click here.

(Note: The information below applies to the House volleyball program only.)

HOUSE VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM

SYAV House Volleyball program is designed as a developmental, recreational league for beginning to intermediate volleyball players and for more advance players that cannot make the commitment for travel or club volleyball. House teams are co-ed and broken into 3 leagues based on age:

  • Elementary School (ES)– 4th thru 6th grade;
  • Middle School (MS) – 7th and 8th grade;
  • High School (HS) – 9th thru 12th grade

PLAYER ASSESSMENT

Within each league (ES, MS, and HS), SYAV attempts to balance teams with a mix of skill levels on each. At the ES level, players are assigned to teams attempting to balance the number players at each grade level, the number of season of experience and the number of first time players. At the MS and HS levels, the balance is achieved by means of a player assessment and draft by the coaches of the league. Participation in the MS and HS player assessment should be considered mandatory – players who do attend the assessment will still be place on teams, but no special requests will be considered/honored.

There is no assessment for elementary school players. Experienced 6th grade players who desire to play at the middle school level must attend the MS player assessment. If their skill is determined to be sufficient to play at the middle school level and there is room on middle school teams, they will be included in the middle school draft and placed on a team. 6th graders who do not wish to play at the middle school level, should not attend the assessment.

PRACTICE / MATCH SCHEDULE

All practices will be held on a weekday evening for 90 minutes. Typically, house teams practice on either Monday or Tuesday with the possibility of a Wednesday practice depending on gym availability. The practice night and time will be assigned to each coach based on the coaches’ schedule needs.

Matches for all leagues are once a week for 90 minutes and will occur between 5:45 PM and 9:00 PM, typically with an early and late time slots. The actual schedule will be determine per level (ES, MS, HS) and will be finalized after the number teams per level is determined. ES House Teams will play on Thursdays at Stone Middle School, MS House Teams will play on Thursdays at Liberty Middle School and HS House Teams will play on Wednesdays at Stone Middle School.

Please note the practice and match nights for each league – do not register for a league for which the player cannot attend participate on the match night and at least one of the practice nights.
