OVERVIEW:

Travel volleyball gives High School and Middle School players an opportunity to play competitive volleyball at a higher level than recreational league volleyball. The program is ideal for skilled middle school players and experienced high school age players looking to increase their skill level and prepare for their high school team tryouts in August. Matches are played against other youth volleyball programs in Fairfax County, sometimes including area club teams (typically younger players). There is both a fall and spring season for the travel league.

Fall Season:

• Limited to middle school (7 / 8 Graders) teams only
• Tryouts on August 30, 2022 at The nZone (Chantilly)*
• Practices start in mid September with matches starting late September*
• Single elimination playoffs in early November*

Spring Season:

• Middle school (7 / 8 Graders) and high school teams with the high school teams broken into 2 leagues – HS 1 (9 / 10 Graders) and HS 2 (11 / 12 Graders)
• Tryouts in late-February* (subject to change)
• Practices start in February/March with matches starting the first week in April*
• Single elimination playoffs in late May*

NOTE: The middle school travel team is restricted to players who are in the 7th or 8th grades only. Experienced 6th grade players may NOT play up on the middle school travel team, but are encouraged to be assessed for the middle school house league.

FORMAT:

The SYAV Travel program typically fields the following middle and high school teams:

• MS (grades 7– 8) (Fall and Spring)
• HS 1 (grades 9 – 10) (Spring only)
• HS 2 (grades 11 – 12) (Spring only)

Teams are formed after an open tryout. Practices are held at least once/twice a week in Centreville/Clifton gyms. Matches are played once a week on Wednesdays. Matches are typically played in Vienna, Springfield or Centreville. (The SYAV travel team’s home site will be Liberty Middle School in Clifton.)

Other youth volleyball programs in the league are from McLean, Chantilly, Vienna, Springfield, Manassas, Haymarket and Braddock Road areas.

REGISTRATION:

Players must register on-line for for the tryouts at the SYA registration site. – please select the “Volleyball – Middle School Travel Tryouts” choice on the player registration page. The total cost for travel is $160.00 [$190.00 out-of-county – see below]. During registration, a $25 non-refundable fee will be collected to cover the travel tryout cost. Once player makes a travel team, she will be asked to complete an online acceptance and pay the registration fee of $135.00 for In-County player ($165.00 for Out-of-County). If a player wants to play on a house team if she doesn’t make the travel team, then the player must register for both the travel tryouts and the house league. If the player makes the travel team and has already registered and paid for the House program, we will move the full house league registration amount to travel league. For any refund, a written submission to the commissioner@syavolleyball.org email address is required to start the refund process. If player is not selected for the travel team, then the fee for the house league should be paid as soon as possible (if not already paid) to maintain the player’s position if there is a wait list for the house league.

NOTE: An additional Fairfax County imposed fee of $30 will be assessed if your child lives outside of the county.

UPCOMING SEASON INFORMATION:

For the Fall season, SYA will field one middle school level team to participate in the spring Dave Lacey Northern Virginia Travel League. A tryout will be held on August 30, 2022 (at nZone, Chantilly) to select players for the team. Registration for the tryouts is currently open and closes on Aug 25, 2022.

NOTE: Only registered players will be allowed to try out for the travel team. Registration closes on Aug 25th.

• A-G: 6:30-7:15 PM
• H-N: 7:20-8:05 PM
• O-Z: 8:10-8:55 PM

NOTE: Players should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled start time to sign in. Players should only come to their assigned time slot as they will not be allowed to tryout in a different time slot.

TRYOUT MAKEUP:

There will NOT be a makeup session.
