Fall 2024 MS Travel League Tryouts for the Middle School Travel team(s) will be held on Aug 20, 2024 at location Nzone, Chantilly. There is no make-up night. Session times are listed below:

• Players with Last Names beginning A-E: Check-in begins at 5:45PM, assessment is 6:00PM
• Players with Last Names beginning F-L: Check-in begins at 6:15PM, assessment is 6:30PM
• Players with Last Names beginning K-Z: Check-in begins at 6:45PM, assessment is 7:00PM

Fall 2024 HS Select League Tryouts for the High School Select team(s) will be held on Aug 20, 2024 at Nzone, Chantilly. There is no make-up night. Session times are listed below:

• Players with Last Names beginning A-H: Check-in begins at  7:30PM, assessment is 7:45PM
• Players with Last Names beginning I-Z: Check-in begins at 8:10PM, assessment is 8:20PM
• Please be on time, we have a tight schedule! Please do not ask to switch times. Safety restrictions require that we limit the number of players in the gym at one time.

• A non-refundable $25.00 tryout fee is assessed during tryout registration

  • Middle School players that do not make the MS Travel team have the option to be placed on a house rec league team. You WILL NOT be placed on a house rec league team automatically. 
  • You MUST:
    • also complete a separate registration for the house league (if you make the travel team, your house registration funds will be moved to the travel registration and you'll pay the remaining balance).
    • attend MS House League evaluations (see House League page for details).
• SYA Volleyball offers a High School Select League in Fall and Spring seasons. 
• Due to gym space limitations there will NOT be a make-up date for MS Travel and HS Select tryouts.

OVERVIEW:

Travel volleyball gives High School and Middle School players an opportunity to play competitive volleyball at a higher level than recreational league volleyball. The program is ideal for skilled middle school players and experienced high school age players looking to increase their skill level and prepare for their high school team tryouts. Matches are played in the Dave Lacey Travel League, competing against other youth volleyball programs in Fairfax County. This league is not for club-level players or teams. Starting 2025, there is ONLY fall season for the travel league.

Fall 2024 Season:

• Limited to middle school (7 / 8 Graders) teams only
• High school (9 - 12 Graders) - Select Level
• MS Travel Tryouts for Fall 2024 are on Aug 20th, at Nzone, Chantilly.
• HS Select Tryouts for Fall 2024 are on Aug 20th, at Nzone, Chantilly.
• Practices start on September 2024 with matches starting mid/late September*
• Single elimination playoffs in November*

NOTE: The middle school travel team is restricted to players who are in the 7th or 8th grades only. Experienced 6th grade players may NOT play up on the middle school travel team, but are encouraged to be assessed for the middle school house league.

FORMAT:

The SYAV Travel program typically fields the following middle and high school teams:

• MS (grades 7 – 8) (Fall)
• HS (grades 9 – 12) (Fall and Spring)

MS Travel players are chosen based on demonstrated volleyball skills, team-work, athleticism, and coach-ability.

Individual playing time is influenced by positional needs, skills, effort, attitude, and practice attendance. There is no requirement for coaches to play any student athletes for a minimum amount of time during matches. As practiced by most competitive volleyball programs, MS/HS Travel playing time is determined by Head Coaches as part of game strategy.

The unbalanced nature of playing time should be considered prior to attending a tryout or accepting a position on a team.

Teams are formed after an open tryout. Practices are held at least twice a week in Centreville/Clifton area gyms. Matches are played once a week on Wednesdays. Matches are typically played in Vienna, Springfield or Centreville. (The SYAV travel team’s home site will be Liberty Middle School in Clifton.)

Other youth volleyball programs* in the league are from McLean, Chantilly, Vienna, Springfield, Manassas, Fort Hunt, Haymarket, and Braddock Road areas.
