The program is ideal for skilled middle school players and experienced high school age players looking to increase their skill level and prepare for their high school team tryouts in August. Other youth volleyball programs in the league are from McLean, Chantilly, Vienna, Springfield, Manassas, Haymarket and Braddock Road areas.
SYA requires players, parents, and volunteers to complete a Concussion Training course (offered by INOVA) each year. Each player and at least one of her/his parents will be required to complete the training before being allowed to tryout for a travel team. For parents who volunteer as a coach, their Coach Concussion Training will meet the requirement for the parent (parents will not have to complete both the parental Concussion Training and the coach Concussion Training). Coaches must also complete the Concussion Training to be authorized to be assigned to an SYA team. To start the process, each family or individual coach must create an INOVA Family Account at:
When creating the Family Account, please select Southwestern Youth Association (SYA) as the organization of which you are a member, so that your Concussion Training is recorded and tracked properly by the system.
NOTE: With regards to concussion training and SYA sports, a particular “year” begins with the fall season and continues through the following summer season (much like a school year). If a player/parent completes the concussion training for a fall registration, they will not need to repeat it until the following fall registration. However, if a player/parent completes the training for a spring/summer registration, they will need to repeat it if they wish to register in the fall as the fall season is the start of the next “year”.
Players must register on-line for for the tryouts at the SYA registration site. – please select the “SYA Volleyball – Middle School Travel Tryouts – Spring 2019” choice on the player registration page. The total cost for travel is $155.50 [$185.50 out-of-county – see below]. During registration, a $25 fee will be collected to cover the travel tryout cost. Once player makes a travel team, she will be asked to complete an online acceptance and pay the registration fee of $130.50. If a player wants to play on a house team if she doesn’t make the travel team, then the player should register for both the travel tryouts and the house league. If the player makes the travel team and has already registered and paid for the House program, you will be refunded the full amount for that registration. A written submission to the email@example.com email address is required to start the refund process. If player is not selected for the travel team, then the fee for the house league should be paid as soon as possible to maintain the player’s position if there is a wait list for the house league.
NOTE: An additional Fairfax County imposed fee of $30 will be assessed if your child lives outside of the county.
