VOLLEYBALL

House Volleyball

Fall season registration is closed!!!

HOUSE VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM

The SYA House Volleyball program is designed as a developmental, recreational league for beginning to intermediate volleyball players and for more advance players that cannot make the commitment for travel or club volleyball. House teams are co-ed and broken into 3 leagues based on age:

  • Elementary School (ES)– 4th thru 6th grade;
  • Middle School (MS) – 7th and 8th grade;
  • High School (HS) – 9th thru 12th grade (Spring season only)

CONCUSSION TRAINING

SYA requires players, parents, and volunteers to complete a Concussion Training course (offered by INOVA) each year. Each player and at least one of her/his parents will be required to complete the training before being authorized to be assigned to an SYA team. For parents who volunteer as a coach, their Coach Concussion Training will meet the requirement for the parent (parents will not have to complete both the parental Concussion Training and the coach Concussion Training). Coaches must also complete the Concussion Training to be authorized to be assigned to an SYA team. To start the process, each family or individual coach must create an INOVA Family Account at:

https://www.youthleaguesusa.com//inova/FamilyAccount.html

When creating the Family Account, please select Southwestern Youth Association (SYA) as the organization of which you are a member, so that your Concussion Training is recorded and tracked properly by the system.

Note: With regards to concussion training and SYA sports, a particular “year” begins with the fall season and continues through the following summer season (much like a school year). If a player/parent completes the concussion training for a fall registration, they will not need to repeat it until the following fall registration. However, if a player/parent completes the training for a spring/summer registration, they will need to repeat it if they wish to register in the fall as the fall season is the start of the next “year”.

PLAYER ASSESSMENT

Within each league (ES, MS, and HS), SYAV attempts to balance teams with a mix of skill levels on each. At the ES level, players are assigned to teams attempting to balance the number players at each grade level, the number of season of experience and the number of first time players. At the MS and HS levels, the balance is achieved by means of a player assessment and draft by the coaches of the league. Participation in the MS and HS player assessment should be considered mandatory – players who do attend the assessment will still be place on teams, but no special requests will be considered/honored.

There is no assessment for elementary school players. Experienced 6th grade players who desire to play at the middle school level must attend the MS player assessment. If their skill is determined to be sufficient to play at the middle school level and there is room on middle school teams, they will be included in the middle school draft and placed on a team. 6th graders who do not wish to play at the middle school level, should not attend the assessment.

PRACTICE / MATCH SCHEDULE

All practices will be held on a weekday evening for 90 minutes. Typically, house teams practice on either Monday or Tuesday with the possibility of a Wednesday practice depending on gym availability. The practice night and time will be assigned to each coach based on the coaches’ schedule needs.

Matches for all leagues are once a week for 90 minutes and will occur between 5:45 PM and 9:00 PM, typically with an early and late time slots. The actual schedule will be determine per level (ES, MS, HS) and will be finalized after the number teams per level is determined. ES House Teams will play on Thursdays at Stone Middle School, MS House Teams will play on Thursdays at Liberty Middle School and HS House Teams will play on Wednesdays at Stone Middle School.

Please note the practice and match nights for each league – do not register for a league for which the player cannot attend participate on the match night and at least one of the practice nights.
