2016-2017 Coach Bios
Stephanie Hagen – Head Coach, 14 Blue
We are thrilled to announce Stephanie Hagen is joining our coaching staff this season! This is a “welcome back” for Stephanie, who played for SYA Volleyball and SYAVBC from 2006 – 2010. During those years Stephanie played varsity for her middle school and high school teams as well. At Battlefield High School she was the Varsity Captain, and played libero on Coach K and Coach Lowery’s SYAVBC 16 Blue Crush team which won CHRVA Gold Bracket Regionals in 2009.
Stephanie is the Head Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Coach at Dominion Christian School in Oakton, Virginia, and she is looking forward to bringing her love of volleyball to coaching for SYAVBC. Her philosophy is that physical fitness should be a top priority for her players, and works with her team to develop the endurance and strength needed to “give it all” for tournaments.

Jack Skym – Head Coach, 15 Blue
Jack brings a multi-sport perspective to coaching volleyball, with years of track, cross country and wrestling experience, including district and state competitions. Jack started playing volleyball during his Navy career and has never looked back! Jack has been coaching youth volleyball since 2007, coaching many levels to include recreational, travel, club and high school. His youth coaching experience also includes several seasons of lacrosse, basketball, and softball, and he really enjoys mentoring young athletes. Jack is the recipient of the Fairfax County 2014 Champions of Character Award. Jack is IMPACT certified and National Federation of State High School Association Interscholastic Coach certified. Jack is the Head Volleyball Coach at Westfield High School in Chantilly, VA. Jack is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and is the Vice President of the 6A Northern Virginia Regional Volleyball Coaches Association. This will be Jack’s third year coaching for SYAVBC, and he is looking forward to another exciting season. Jack led his 2015 team to a 37-19-2 season; and completed the 2016 season 57-17-2; for a combined club record of 94-36-4.
Andrew Sills – Assistant Coach, 15 Blue
Andrew Sills has been affiliated with SYA Volleyball both as a player and a coach since 2013. Andrew has coached SYA Volleyball’s house and travel teams and clinics for many years, and continues to do so outside of the Club season. Andrew is returning to SYAVBC for his third year coaching, and is ready to build on the successes of his previous seasons. Andrew is IMPACT certified.
Jeff Huse – Head Coach, 15 Green
We are excited to welcome Jeff Huse to our coaching staff this season! Jeff has over 30 years of youth coaching experience in volleyball, baseball, and basketball, working primarily with middle school and elementary school players. Jeff is also a multi-sport athlete with years of playing baseball, basketball, football and track, including for his high school team in Gainesville, Missouri. Jeff has 5 years of coaching experience with SYA Volleyball’s house and middle school travel teams, and he really enjoys mentoring young athletes. Jeff is IMPACT certified, received the recognition of SYA Outstanding Volunteer in 2015, and is looking forward to a terrific season with SYAVBC.
Elyse Texido – Co-Coach, 16 Blue
Elyse Texido returns to SYAVBC for another great season! Elyse has many years of playing and coaching experience, playing since her middle school years in New York. Elyse was the varsity setter for St. Mary’s High School in Buffalo, NY, and led her team to 3 state championships. She also played for Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club, one of the most successful club programs in the Western Empire Region of USAV. Elyse went on to play for Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania; her senior year she was named Mercyhurst Athlete of the Year (across all sports) and the PSAC West Defensive Player of the year. Elyse enjoyed her time coaching 15s with Club Chill in Erie, PA and has also coached numerous juniors volleyball camps over the years. Elyse is IMPACT certified, and she is excited to continue coaching for SYAVBC.
Steve Schumacher – Co-Coach, 16 Blue
Steve Schumacher returns to SYAVBC this season as the 16 Blue Co-Coach. Before joining SYAVBC, Steve coached two seasons for the boys program at NVVA (Sterling, VA). As Head Coach, he led his team to two consecutive CHRVA regional championships, an East Coast championship, and a top ten finish at USAV Nationals. Steve was a four-year starter for the Grove City College Men’s Club Volleyball team, and helped lead his team to three consecutive top-ten finishes at NCVF Nationals (including placing 3rd in 2010). Prior to that, Steve played Varsity Volleyball at Webster Schroeder High School (Webster, NY) and played club for Pace Bootlegger (Western Empire Region). Steve is the JV Head Coach at Centreville High School in Centreville, VA, and is IMPACT certified.
Corey Gough – Assistant Coach, 17 Blue
Corey Gough grew up on the soccer field, playing competitively through high school, and coached a U10 soccer team while he was in college. In his senior year of high school, he began playing volleyball, competing in A and AA tournaments. Corey has coached club volleyball for two years and has given private coaching lessons for four years. He graduated from UVA with a BS in Electrical Engineering and is currently working toward a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management. Corey is IMPACT certified, and we are thrilled to welcome him to SYA Volleyball Club.
Patrick Lowery – Head Coach, 17 Blue and Co-Coach, 18 Blue
Coach Lowery began coaching volleyball for SYA in 1996. He coached his middle school teams to seven league and tournament championships. His success and skills as a coach led him to be selected as the first travel coach when SYA expanded their program. His middle school travel teams won the All-County Travel League Tournament in 2006 and 2007.
In 2008, Coach Lowery became one of the founding coaches of the SYA Volleyball Club. In just the second year of its existence, Coach Lowery’s 16’s team, Blue Crush, won the Gold Bracket of the CHRVA 16’s Club Regional Tournament. His team compiled a 103-43 record for the 2009 season and finished the season ranked 12th in the region. Since then, his teams have gone on to compete in the CHRVA Club Regional Gold bracket in three more seasons, ranking within the top 20 teams in the region. In 2016, his 17 Edge team won the CHRVA Club Regional Gold bracket, compiled a 116-23 record and finished the season ranked 7th in CHRVA as well as a second place finish at Capitol Hill Classic.
Coach Lowery is a nationally ranked amateur handball player; winning a National Championship in 1994 and finishing second in National Championships 1996, 2002, 2005 & 2008. He has modified his own training regimen to train his teams to their peak physical condition and it is this regimen which makes him one of the finest volleyball clinicians in the Washington/Metro area. Pat is IMPACT certified.
Nick Kokulis – Co-Coach, 18 Blue
Nick has been coaching volleyball since 1993, developing players from 4th through 12th grades and adults. In 1998, he became the first JV Head Coach at Chantilly HS. During his nine years at Chantilly he served as the varsity assistant coach for three of those years. Nick started playing volleyball his senior year in high school and went on to play volleyball on the JMU Men’s Volleyball Club Team for two years before an injury ended his career. He has been a teacher with Fairfax County Public Schools since 1985. Nick also coaches the Junior Varsity team and is the varsity assistant coach at Trinity Christian School in Fairfax, VA and serves as SYAVBC’s Coaching Director and the SYA Volleyball Commissioner.
Nick has been coaching for SYA (our parent organization) since 2000. In 2008, he was one of the founding members of SYAVBC, and coached a 16’s team the first season. In 2009, his Blue Crush 16’s team won the CHRVA Club Regional’s Gold Bracket. Since then, Nick’s teams have gone on to compete in the CHRVA Club Regional Gold bracket in four more seasons, including another win in 2016 with his 17 Edge team that finished the season ranked 7th in CHRVA with a 116 – 23 record and a second place finish at Capitol Hill Classic.
Nick is ASEP Coaching Principles certified, ASEP Sports First Aid certified, a 2010 Champion of Character Award winner and IMPACT certified.
